B Jayashree

B Jayashree started her theatre journey at a tender age of 4 in her grandfather, Kannada theatre legend Gubbi Veeranna’s “Gubbi Channa Basaveshwara Swamy Theatrical Company”. Later she joined the National School of Drama, New Delhi, and graduated in the year 1973. Gubbi Company and NSD not only provided her with education but also helped her gain valuable life lessons in the process. The informal means of interaction and learning served as a basic block for her future. In her 68 years of theatre journey, B Jayashree has a versatile and prolific experience working with directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B.V. Karanth, N. S. Venkataram, and Prasanna among others. She has acted and directed close to 100 plays in Kannada, Hindi, English, and Konkani languages. Her performances and songs in Kannada cinema have earned a lot of name and praise.
Smt B Jayashree is the creative director ‘Spandana’ – a Bengaluru-based theatre organization that came into being in 1976. Close to 5 decades of journey, Spandana has staged many magnificent plays. One of the striking features of the group is its successful efforts in using modern techniques to present Karnataka’s folk tradition in an aesthetic style.
