The deep baritone voice, the ever-smiling face, the Voice of Indian Sports – Charu Sharma is a Mayo College, Ajmer, St. Stephen’s, Delhi, Davidson College, North Carolina alumni. Sports have always been an integral part of Charu’s life since he was a child. A six-time junior national springboard diving champion, he qualified for the Commonwealth Games, Edmonton, Canada (1978). He was nominated as the ‘All-Southern Conference’ Diver, USA (1980). Having participated in diving, swimming, water polo, and gymnastics, Charu’s serious sports interests also lie in first division league cricket (Cal & Hyd), golf, tennis, badminton, rugby, squash, basketball, rifle shooting, athletics apart from being a serious rock climber and mountaineer.
Charu Sharma’s sportscasting career in 1982 at the IX Asian Games. He went on to become India’s most respected multisport television commentator & anchor. Kabbaddi, which was a popular sport only in the hinterland of India today is the second most watched sport on Indian television, thanks to Charu. Mashal Sports was born in early 2011 through which he conceptualized, founded, and conducted India’s India’s biggest and most successful sporting revolution – the Pro Kabaddi League. The inaugural edition of 2014 opened and how. The arenas were packed, people were excited, the glitz and glamour were there, and PKL was a huge success. Not only did it succeed where it was supposed to but also in the urban scenarios! If Kabbaddi is an upmarket and aspirational sport today, it is kudos to Charu Sharma.
