Chandra has been deeply involved and associated with the crafts and crafts people of India for over three decades. Her special interest has been in the hand-loom traditions of India. She is engaged in the revival of traditional Banares hand-woven brocades,in which she is an expert. Chandra has founded and runs an NGO called Kadambari, which works in the area of promoting Crafts, and Performing and Fine arts. She has been pivotal in making Shivarapatna a heritage crafts village by garnering government support for its stone sculptors. She helped the revival of the famous rod puppets of Karnataka, an art form that had been in danger of extinction.
