Born in Hukkalu village in Saagara Taluk, he graduated from the Engineering college in Davanagere and M. Tech from N I E Mysore. Shri Gajanana Sharma also has an M A from KSOU, Mysore, and a Ph.D. from Kannada University, Hampi. By profession, he was a superintending engineer in the KEB for thirty-five years but has left an indelible mark in different fields of Kannada Literature as an actor, playwright, director, and writer.

He has acted and directed and authored more than twenty books including researched works, travelogues, plays, translations, novels, and dialogues for two Kannada films, “Dweepa” and “Naayi Neralu. “Punarvasu” is a well-known novel. He has been honored with the Karnataka Nataka Academy award in 2012 and 2016, he was bestowed the Kannada Sahitya Academy award for his work, “Kaadu Kaniveya Haadu Hakki”, a work on the life of the Kannada Sugama Sangeetha genius Garthikere Raghanna. He has recorded his career experience in the works “Kailasa Manasa”, “Let’s Look Before Going to Gomukha” (travel work), “Memories of My Career”.
