Bharathi Ghanashyam, a debut author, first began writing middle and short stories for children in the early 90s. These were published in Deccan Herald and The Hindu. Over the years, she evolved into a full-time writer, working with a development communications agency. For her work she travelled to remote areas in India, meeting marginalized and hard-to-reach communities and writing their stories from the ground up. An independent health journalist for several years, Bharathi has won two international awards and a fellowship for excellence in writing on health. Her health stories have been published by The Lancet and others. Bharathi’s passion for creative writing found expression with Rajammal, a story told in an old-world style. It took her over 10 years to write it in the face of almost insurmountable challenges, and often an urge to abandon the project. But Rajammal refused to die.
